Gov. Kemp Appoints Indian American Attorney as District Attorney in Northwest Georgia

  • Samir Patel was appointed by Gov. Brian Kemp as district attorney for the Cherokee Circuit Court, covering Bartow and Gordon counties.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced the appointment of Samir Patel to fill the District Attorney vacancy in the Cherokee Circuit Court on April 7. A thrilled Patel, speaking to American Kahani on his appointment said, “I am incredibly grateful to have the confidence of Governor Kemp to fill the district attorney appointment of the Cherokee Judicial District Attorney. The State of Georgia currently has 49 District Attorneys and, I believe, I am the first individual of Indian descent in Georgia to sit as a District Attorney.”

Patel, an associate attorney with White and Choate, will fill the vacancy created by the appointment of Rosemary Greene as superior court judge of the Cherokee Judicial Circuit. Patel previously served as assistant public defender for the circuit, which includes Bartow and Gordon counties.

“When I submitted my name for consideration, I quickly realized there are many individuals who work to promote and encourage involvement of South Asians in politics.”

Speaking to American Kahani about what this appointment means for Indian Americans, Patel said, “When I submitted my name for consideration, I quickly realized there are many individuals who work to promote and encourage involvement of South Asians in politics.  Prior to this application process, I was under the impression South Asians were infrequently involved in politics. This experience has opened my eyes to the realization that individuals of South Asian descent should never view their background as a barrier to politics. It is my hope this appointment could inspire others to follow their dreams in politics. I am blessed to have received so many congratulatory messages from friends, family, and others regarding this appointment.  Those in the Indian community that have reached out to me, are so supportive and proud of this appointment.”

A Cartersville litigator, Patel of White and Choate, has handled criminal defense, family law and general litigation since 2010 as Associate Attorney. Since 2017, Patel has also served as Municipal Court Judge of Euharlee, GA. Patel previously served as a Part Time Instructor at ITT Technical Institute in Kennesaw, teaching criminal law, constitutional law, and ethics. Patel was also an Assistant Public Defender in the Cherokee Judicial Circuit for five years. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Advocates for Children.
