People’s Verdict: Indian American Teen’s Growing Up Pangs are Hilarious

  • Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever” wins People’s Choice Award for Best Comedy Show. Series co-creator Mindy Kaling and lead actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan accept the award.

Mindy Kaling’s Netflix show “Never Have I Ever,” a lively story of a first-generation Indian American teenager named Devi, played by breakout star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, has won the 2020 People’s Choice Award (PCA) for the Best Comedy Show. The coming of age comedy-drama television series was created by Kaling and Lang Fisher, and is loosely based on Kaling’s years growing up.

The Indian American actress and producer accepted the award in person, accompanied by Ramakrishnan. It was Kaling’s first major public appearance since announcing the arrival of her second child.

“We can’t believe we were nominated in such an amazing company,” Kaling said. “It’s great to be with that group of shows. Thank you so much for this award and huge thank you to Netflix and Universal TV. This means the world to us because it’s coming from you, the fans. We started out to tell a funny story about an Indian-American girl and her family and had no idea that we would get this response.”

Thanking pop culture fans around the world for celebrating a unique family, Ramkrishnan said: “It’s amazing to see how the show connected with people of color, LGBTQIA+, immigrant communities and more from all around the world.”
