Singer Lizzo Wears Indian Designer Gaurav Gupta’s ‘Endless Swirl Gown’ for Poster of Her HBO Max Documentary

Globally acclaimed Indian fashion designer Gaurav Gupta was the genius behind the “Endless Swirl Gown,” which the vivacious singer Lizzo wore for the poster of her HBO Max documentary “Lizzo- Live in Concert.” Gupta’s website says the custom gown, a continuation of the designs in his latest collection “Scarlet Fascinations,” has “a rich, scarlet hue with dramatic, sculptural frills and delicate beaded embellishments.”

In a Facebook post, Gupta writes that “Lizzo has always been this impeccable force to be reckoned with.” Calling her “a true artist,” he wrote that Lizzo’s “talents have no bounds. I was thrilled to dress her for her new documentary which gives her audience intimate access to her meteoric rise.”

Lizzo was styled by Jason Rembert in Gupta’s gown for the documentary promotions. The whole process of designing the gown and bringing it to life was chronicled in a video shot by Pranav Goswamy, featuring Gupta himself at work on the dress.

A leader in couture and experiential space design for the last 18 years, Gupta has carved his own new world in the global couture space. His website describes him as “future primitive,” and calls his design language “a composition of what might be and what was.”

“For me, it was like Halle Berry and the Elie Saab dress – A-listers on the red carpet in Louis Vuitton and Dior, and then your name is right next to that. Next thing you know, you make it to the best-dressed lists, the stars and stylists reach out to us, and it’s a snowball effect.”

He founded his eponymous label in 2005. After graduating from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, his work was instantly picked up, first as work experience with renowned Turkish designer Hussein Chalayan. Subsequently, recognition followed with the Makuhari Grand Prix, Mittelmoda, and Altaroma Altamoda where he was variously awarded for being the future of couture.

He has grown a significant celebrity follower base in the U.S. and beyond in recent years. International celebrities who have recently worn Gaurav Gupta creations to events include Bebe Rexha, Bingbing Fan, Kylie Minogue, Jeremy Pope, Maluma, and Meghan Thee Stallion among others.

Gupta told Grazia, a weekly women’s magazine, that he’s never seen so much press around a dress when Megan Thee Stallion (styled by Eric Archibald) made an appearance at the 2022 Oscars in his GG Fantasy Biomorphic gown. “For me, it was like Halle Berry and the Elie Saab dress – A-listers on the red carpet in Louis Vuitton and Dior, and then your name is right next to that. Next thing you know, you make it to the best-dressed lists, the stars and stylists reach out to us, and it’s a snowball effect.” After that, she dressed Jennifer Hudson in a gold vintage-inspired ensemble for the 2022 Producers Guild Awards in LA. Cardi B followed it up in GG’s Amorphous Shapeshifter gown in her music video remix of No Love.

He told the magazine that he’s not always sure if the short-listed dress will finally get the outing it deserves. “It’s a mix actually – when you’re custom-making, there is a bit of awareness – but there will be a bunch of brands doing the same thing. Eventually, you leave it there, knowing you’ve done your best to make it happen.”

Gupta will showcase his latest couture collection as part of Paris Haute Couture Week on Jan. 26, the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode announced on its website.
