Former Facebook executive Aarthi Ramamurthy has been hired as Head of International at Clubhouse, an invite-only social media app. In her new role, Ramamurthy will focus on building global communities on the platform. Business Insider says Ramamurthy has “significant experience building products that cater to communities and creators, both of which are crucial areas for Clubhouse as it charts global expansion plans.”
Ramamurthy took to Twitter to talk about her new position at Clubhouse. “Coming from India, I’m excited to bring a different perspective, and work with the small + mighty, exceptional team that @pdavison and @rohanseth have hired at Clubhouse. Let’s gooooo!”
Ramamurthy is the founder and CEO of Lumoid, an online retail hub for buying and renting the latest in tech gear. During her three-and-a-half-year stint at Facebook, Ramamurthy led the company’s product efforts for its communities product group, creator monetization, and digital payments products. Prior to Facebook, Ramamurthy had stints at Netflix and Microsoft. She was hired by Microsoft as one of their youngest product managers and has built products such as Xbox LIVE and Netflix’s video streaming software.
Ramamurthy has also been hosting a recurring audio show ‘The Good Time Show’ on Clubhouse with her spouse Sriram Krishnan, a general partner at the Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. The show, one of the earliest on the platform, has attracted several prominent guests, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Coinbase co-founder Brian Armstrong, and former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, among others.
The Chennai native holds a Masters degree in Software Engineering from PSG College of Technology. Ramamuthy lives in San Francisco with her husband and their toddler daughter.
Launched in March 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Clubhouse, co-founded by Rohan Seth and Paul Davison has been creating a lot of buzz, thanks to its brand value and celebrity following. The invitation-only app lets members create rooms on various topics, and other users can drop in to either listen in on the conversation or participate.
Clubhouse has over 2 million users, including high-profile celebrities like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Drake, Tiffany Haddish and Oprah Winfrey. Last month, it secured a $100 million investment, a Business Insider report said, adding: “The company’s new funding gave it a post-money valuation of up to $1.4 billion, a tenfold increase from the previous round.” The app is being heralded as “the first new interesting social network in almost a decade,” by serial entrepreneur Elad Gil.
“Clubhouse was designed to be a space for authentic conversation and expression—where people can have fun, learn, make meaningful connections, and share rich experiences with others around the world,” the website says. Clubhouse is currently on iPhone only.
In a blog post published on the Clubhouse website, Seth and Davison talk about the genesis of the app and discuss plans to expand it. “Our focus now is on opening up Clubhouse to the whole world,” they say on the blogpost. “With that goal in mind for 2021, we have secured a new round of funding,” they say, adding, “It’s always been important to us to have investors who care deeply about diversity, and who will work hard to help us make Clubhouse a welcoming and inclusive community. We’re working hard to scale Clubhouse as fast as we can and open it up to everyone soon.”
