Indian American Celebrities, Nepali American and Indian Designers Make a Splash on Golden Globes Red Carpet 

  • Comedian Nikki Glaser, the emcee for the evening, wore Prabal Gurung outfits twice — once on the red carpet, and in a segment on stage — actress and comedian Catherine O’Hara donned a Rahul Mishra couture gown.

Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia may not have won a Golden Globe award this past weekend for her debut feature film “All We Imagine As Light,” but she made history as the first Indian to be nominated for best director category.  The film, set in India, about sisterhood in modern Mumbai, was nominated in two categories — Best Non-English Language Film and Best Director (Motion Picture). Kapadia lost out to Brady Corbet, who nominated for his acclaimed film “The Brutalist,” for best director, while the best foreign award was given to “Emilia Perez.”

Kapadia walked the red carpet, dressed in an elegant black silk jumpsuit designed by Payal Khandwala, Part of Khandwala’s Autumn-Winter 2024 collection, the handwoven jumpsuit is made from lightweight silk with brocade detailing on the pockets and a signature loop neck.

There were several other Indian connections at the awards night, with Indian designers once again making a global mark with their creativity on the red carpet. 

Mindy Kaling presented award for the Best Actress in a TV Series Musical/Comedy. The Indian American actress, writer, producer and director was seen in a floor-length metallic gold gown by Ashi Studio with a strapless neckline and a form-fitting bodice with a subtle slit just below the calf.

While comedian Nikki Glaser, the emcee for the evening, has several outfit changes, she was seen on the red carpet in an elegant Prabal Gurung gown.  It featured a sweetheart neckline with a fitted bodice. During one of her acts on stage, she wore another creation by the Nepali American designer — a fuchsia sequin and crystal hand-embroidered V-neck column gown. 

Actress and comedian Catherine O’Hara donned a Rahul Mishra couture gown. The shimmery hand-embroidered ‘Celestial Aura’ gown in noir is from Mishra’s Couture Fall 2024 collection — Aura.

Lilly Singh wore a dazzling sequined gown designed by Gaurav Gupta. She repped a champagne brand at the red carpet and interviewed a few guests. She then switched into a shirt and skirt combo from Ru by Rupal, the label by designer Rupel Banerjee. 

Indian designer brand Sabyasachi was also represented at the awards ceremony as well, with Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria wearing a Sabyasachi sari. The streaming platform took home seven awards.

Also seen on the red carpet was Indian fashion designer-turned-producer Manish Malhotra. He made a stylish debut in a custom-designed black tuxedo designed by his label, with a white shawl lapel and abstract detailing.
