Drs. Komal Bajaj and Lekshmi Santhosh Selected for National Academy of Medicine’s Inaugural Class of Scholars

  • The Indian American physicians were among 10 chosen for their professional qualifications, accomplishments, leadership and potential to advance.

Two Indian Americans — Drs. Komal Bajaj and Lekshmi Santhosh — were among 10 professionals selected for the National Academy of Medicine’s inaugural class of the NAM Scholars in Diagnostic Excellence program. Funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, this collaborative program with the Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS) supports up to 10 scholars in a one-year, part-time experience to advance the scholars’ diagnostic skills, reduce diagnostic errors that lead to patient harm, and accelerate their career development as national leaders in this field. The scholars were chosen based on their professional qualifications, accomplishments, leadership, potential to advance diagnostic excellence, and quality, feasibility, and implementation of their project proposals.

“We were delighted with the outstanding proposals submitted in the first year of this important program,” said Victor J. Dzau, president of the National Academy of Medicine. “We look forward to working with such an impressive cohort of extraordinary scholars, and my hope is that their work to improve diagnostic quality and safety will have profound effects not only on the way our health care system operates but also on the lives of patients.”

Dr. Komal Bajaj is the chief quality officer at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, and professor of obstetrics and gynecology and women’s health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx New York. An internationally recognized speaker on the use of simulation to advance healthcare quality and safety, Bajaj’s scholarly interests include defining innovative approaches to embed simulation within the clinical environment, developing sustainable programs to build agency in healthcare teams, and characterizing the emerging role of debriefing in healthcare quality/safety. She sits on the Board of Trustees of Harvard’s Center for Medical Simulation, the Advisory Board for the Foundation for Healthcare Simulation Safety and on the External Advisory Board for the Joan H. Marks Graduate Program in Human Genetics of Sarah Lawrence College. Bajaj attended medical school at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and completed her training in Obstetrics & Gynecology at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University. Following residency, she completed a fellowship in Reproductive Genetics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She completed a Masters in Health Professional Education from the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions.

Dr. Lekshmi Santhosh is an assistant professor of pulmonary/critical care medicine and hospital medicine at University of California, San Francisco’s department of medicine. She specializes in pulmonary and critical care medicine with a focus on medical education. Her primary interests in medical educational research are related to ICU transitions of care, women in leadership development, clinical reasoning, and subspecialty education career choice. The founder and physician faculty lead of the multidisciplinary post-COVID OPTIMAL Clinic at UCSF Health, Santhosh is an Associate Program Director for the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship. She obtained her Master’s in Health Professions Education from UC-Berkeley.
