Indian American Motel Owner Shot Dead by Homeless Trespasser in Newport, North Carolina

  • Satyen Naik, 46, was killed by suspect Troy Kellum, who barricaded himself inside a room at Hostess House before taking his own life.

An Indian American motel owner in North Carolina was shot dead by a homeless trespasser earlier this week. Satyen Naik, who owned Hostess House in Newport, was killed by suspect Troy Kellum, who barricaded himself inside a room at the property before taking his own life, police told local media. The 46-year-old, also known as “Baca,” was discovered with a gunshot wound outside the motel when police arrived on the scene on Dec. 6,” according to ECTI-TV. “Officers were able to pull hotel Naik, a to safety but he died at the hospital,” the report added/

Newport Police Chief Keith Lewis told WCTI-TV a 9-1-1 call at around 10 a.m. reported a trespasser at the Hostess House. During the call, a disturbance was heard in the background and shortly after 9-1-1 caller told dispatchers that someone had been shot. Kellum” barricaded himself in a room for hours before officials say the Special Response Team entered the room,” Lewis said, adding “that’s when Kellum died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.” Kellum had been squatting at the hotel and other places, and Lewis said that is believed to be what prompted Naik to initially contact law enforcement.

Lewis told media that Hostess House was a family-owned business, and Naik operated this business daily with his family.
