Hollywood Star Johnny Depp is Directing a Film Titled ‘Modi.’ No, It’s Not What You’re Thinking

  • It is a biopic of Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani that stars Al Pacino.

Before 1.4 billion Indians begin celebrating, it should be clarified that Hollywood is not making a film about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Unless, the BJP immediately copyrights the name Modi and prevents its misuse, there will be a film titled “Modi” that will have nothing to do with India’s supreme leader Narendra Damodardas Modi.

Hollywood actor Johnny Depp is directing a film titled “Modi” — a biopic of Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani. He worked mainly in France, and is known for portraits and nudes in a modern style. Although his art wasn’t received well during his lifetime, he later became much sought-after.

“Modi,” which is wrapping production, follows Modigliani’s life in “a 48-hour whirlwind, capturing a chaotic series of events through the streets and bars of war-torn Paris during World War I,” according to a press release cited by The Hollywood Reporter and other entertainment portals.. “On the run from the police, Modi’s desire to end his career and leave the city is dismissed by fellow Bohemians. The chaos reaches a crescendo when he’s faced with a collector who could change his life.”

The film is Depp’s first directing role in 25 years since “The Brave” in 1997. “Modi” stars Riccardo Scamarcio, Antonia Desplat, Stephen Graham, Bruno Gouery, Ryan McParland, Luisa Ranieri, Sally Phillips and Al Pacino.

In a statement reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Depp called the experience of making Modi “an incredibly fulfilling and transformative experience.” He expressed “profound gratitude to the entire cast, crew, and producers for their unwavering commitment and creativity.” He cited Pacino’s involvement as a key reason he joined the project. “To Al, who requested that I make this film — how could I refuse Pacino?” He called the film “a testament to the collaborative spirit of independent filmmaking,” and said he’s “excited to present this unique and compelling story to the world.”
