Joyce Mehta Becomes First Woman, First Indian American President of South Brunswick Board of Education

  • The mother of two was re-elected for a second term last November.

The South Brunswick Board of Education in New Jersey has elected Joyce Mehta as its president, making her the first woman and first Indian American picked for the post. She replaces Barry Nathanson who served as BOE president for the past few years.

The South Brunswick Patch reported that Mehta was nominated by Board member Mike Mitchell who described her as “an effective communicator, a strong leader, and active community partner.”

An attorney by training, she has more than 20 years of experience working in education and government, with extensive experience in the education fields, particularly in Education Policy, Curriculum, Mental Health.

The London-born and raised Mehta was first elected to the BOE in 2017. The mother of two was re-elected for a second term last November. She is the chair of the Policy Committee of the New Jersey School Boards Association Board of Directors Delegate for Middlesex County, as well as on the NJSBA Equity Committee. She is also the BOE Liaison for the South Brunswick Commission on Women. She is currently a client partner at Nuvento, a company that leverages digital technology to grow companies.

Mehta told American Kahani that “its an honor and privilege” to be elected “the first woman of color” to the president of the South Brunswick BOE. “As we continue to shatter the glass ceiling, we recognize that our strength lies in our diversity and inclusion,” she said. “We strive to achieve equity in education for all students & to unify our community.”

The other two Indian Americans on the BOE are Raja Krishna and newcomer Deepa Karthik.
