Hindu American Tulsi Gabbard Roped In to Help Trump Prepare for Debate With Kamala Harris
- The former Hawaii congresswoman had a memorable exchange with the California senator during a 2019 Democratic presidential primary debate.
Former Hawaii congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard is helping former President Donald J. Trump prepare for his debate with Vice President Kamala Harris. The 2020 Democratic presidential candidate and the first Hindu American in Congress, who was briefly considered to be Trumpâs running mate, has been âbrought in to sharpen Trumpâs attacks in a recent practice session at his private club and home, Mar-a-Lago,â The New York Times has reported.
Gabbard left the Democratic party in 2021 accusing it of being âunder complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers who are driven by cowardly wokeness, who divide us by racializing every issue and stoking anti-white racism.â
The Times noted that Gabbardâs involvement in the debate preparation, âwhich has not previously been reported, was partly because of her own performance in a 2019 Democratic presidential primary debate when she eviscerated Harris in a memorable onstage encounter.âÂ
Additional âkey qualitiesâ she brings, The Times mentioned are that sheâs âa woman, at a moment when Trump is for a second time facing a woman as his general election rival; and sheâs a former House member, giving her policy experience.â
Gabbard, who served in the House from 2013 to the end of 2020, is an outspoken critic of aid to Ukraine and U.S. military interventions overseas and has âoften shared Trumpâs approach toward the world in his post-presidency,â The Washington Post said.
During the 2019 debate, Gabbard said Harris âput over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and then laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana,â the Associated Press reported at the time. She further accused Harris of having âblocked evidence that would have freed an innocent man from death row until the courts forced her to do so.â
In her response on the debate stage, Harris attempted to dismiss Gabbard, saying, âI am proud of making a decision to not just give fancy speeches, or be in a legislative body and give speeches on the floor, but actually doing the work.â
Gabbard later told the Associated Press that she was âsurprised at how unprepared she was to respond to them. Just from, you know, I would imagine that youâd prepare before going into a debate,â she added. âAnd also that she made no attempt to deny them or frankly justify them if she was proud of those decisions.â
