How Yoga Helped Me Recover from Exercise-Induced Anaphylactic Attacks

  • I have lost 11 pounds in less than a month and I am running again.

International Yoga Day is coming up on June 21. To be honest this is the first time I feel super-excited about IYD. For all these years I had, like many of us, misunderstood Yoga. Would you believe me if I told you that Yoga was intimately personal? Perhaps even more personal than any possible physical activity that you have experienced so far. Exactly!! I am not referring just to exercises that increase body flexibility. All that we tend to attribute to Yoga is what it seems on the surface. There is a magical element to Yoga. To understand Yoga, in its authentic form, we need the knowledge and guidance of Master yogis.

The ultimate authority on the science of yoga, Maharshi Patanjali mentions in his Yoga Sutras, written around the 2nd century BC, that the practice of Yoga restrains the modulations of the mind. The spiritual guide Bhagavat Gita (written around 1,000 BC) refers to yoga as a balanced state and as skill in action. To sum up, yoga is an experiential journey to unite with our true source. The meaning unfolds to us as we continue the journey over a long period with dedication and detachment.

Since I began this topic by asking you all a very personal question, I will keep my end of the bargain and share a story of yoga. I had a recent opportunity to participate in an intensive 200HR Yoga Teacher’s training course. This online course offered by Sri Sri School of Yoga (SSSY) spanned over 8 weeks. Founded by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a global humanitarian and thought leader in yoga and meditation, SSSY teaches authentic knowledge and practice of Yoga.

During these 8 weeks, we learned the guidelines of the yogic journey. I am happy to share the effects it so far has had on the body mind and soul. On second thoughts, I will be easy on your brain and limit the story to the material effects on the body. I am sure it will be fun to experience the rest for yourself.

Before you write it off as another weight loss story, I would like to ask if you knew about exercise-induced anaphylactic attacks. It is a severe allergy attack when the windpipe gets swollen, and one can die from it. I experienced it after a 45-minute run and having a bowl of shrimp Tom Yum soup, 30 mins before running. I was blind-sided about being allergic to shellfish. As a result of the attack, I temporarily lost vision and then consciousness. My husband called 911 immediately. At the Emergency, the doctor gave steroid shots to revive me. This was 9 years ago. I had just run a half-marathon couple of months before. I was slim then.

Over the next few years, my body became 15 lbs. heavier. Despite being health conscious, making a persistent effort to watch everything I ate, and even fasting intermittently, my body would not reverse. My metabolism had changed. After almost a decade, I thought I would never be able to get back to my previous constitution.  I am full of gratitude that a cleansing technique during my yoga training rejuvenated my digestive tract lining and simply did the magic. I have lost 11 lbs. in less than a month and I am running again.
