Virginia Democratic House Delegate Suhas Subramanyam Wins Second Term in 87th District

  • A small business owner and former White House technology policy advisor, he defeated his GOP opponent Greg Moulthrop by a significant margin.

Suhas Subramanyam, a Democratic member of the Virginia House of Delegates, representing District 87, has won a second term, defeating his GOP opponent Greg Moulthrop. As of Nov. 3 morning, New York Times data showed Subramanyam leading Moulthrop with 58 percent to 41 percent of the vote. Subramanyam had garnered 22,396 votes compared to Moulthrop’s 15,652 votes, according to the Times. Subramanyam, 35, ran uncontested in the June 8 Virginia primaries.

“Thank you to the people of Prince William and Loudoun for reelecting me and putting your trust in me again,” Subramanyam tweeted on Nov. 2. “Regardless of what happens the rest of tonight, I will continue to fight for you, empower you, and put your priorities first.”

In a statement he shared on Twitter, he said he was “so humbled and grateful” that the 87th District again put their faith in him as a delegate. “I promised two years ago that I would put people over special interests and do everything I could to empower my constituents. I am proud to have kept those promises, in the process fully funding our schools, curbing gun violence, addressing rising tolls and utility costs, and helping small businesses and families through one of the worst pandemics in our commonwealth’s history.”

A small business owner, Subramanyam ran on improving funding for public education, lowering healthcare costs, further reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting the right to vote, improving access to the ballot in Virginia and supporting Virginians through the changing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to his campaign website.

Price Williams Times noted that the “race was not considered one of the state’s more competitive contests” but was “a bit closer than when Subramanyam won the seat in 2019.” That year, he garnered 62 percent of the vote or 17,693 of the ballots cast, while his GOP opponent William Brennan Jr. won about 38 percent or 10,818 votes.

The Indian American made history in 2019 when he won his bid for the House in the Nov. 5 election, along with Ghazala Hashmi, who won her State Senate seat. Both Subramanyam and Hashmi, along with dozens of other Democratic candidates were catalytic in turning the southern state totally blue as the Democrats took full control of state legislature. Subramanyam and Hashmi assumed office on Jan. 8, 2020. Subramanyam’s current term ends on Jan.12, 2022. Hashmi was elected to a four-year term, which ends on Jan.10, 2024.

The former White House technology policy advisor to President Obama, Subramanyam is an attorney by training. He runs S2 Impact, a technology consulting firm that advises companies and nonprofits on law, technology and government regulations. He also enjoyed a stint on Capitol Hill as a healthcare and veterans policy aide. He clerked for Senator Dick Durbin on the Senate Judiciary Committee, where he worked on reintroducing the DREAM Act and helped Senator Durbin and his team work on proposing a range of criminal justice reforms. He also served as a legislative aide handling legislation related to health care (including the Affordable Care Act), veterans, agriculture, food safety, and education.

Born and raised in the United States, Subramanyam’s Indian parents are both physicians, as is his sister. He’s an alumnus of Tulane University in New Orleans, where he did his undergraduate degree and Northwestern University in Illinois from where he graduated with a law degree.
