Pakistani American Tan France of ‘Queer Eye’ Fame Joins Hulu Comedy Series ‘Deli Boys’ in First Scripted Guest Star Role

  • Born Tanveer Wasim Safdar in Doncaster to Pakistani immigrant parents, he is one of the first openly gay Muslim men on Western television.

British American fashion designer, entrepreneur and television personality Tan France is set to join Onyx Collective’s upcoming comedy series “Deli Boys,” marking a career-first role in scripted television. He will star alongside series regulars Asif Ali, Saagar Shaikh, Poorna Jagannathan, Alfie Fuller and Brian George. He will play Zubair, a British Pakistani South London gang leader, who is decreed as “smart, intimidating and dressed to kill.” The series premieres March 6 on Hulu. 

Born Tanveer Wasim Safdar on April 20, 1983 in Doncaster to Muslim Pakistani immigrant parents, France is best known for the Netflix makeover series “Queer Eye.” He is one of the first openly gay South Asian men on a major show, and one of the first openly gay Muslim men on Western television. He is married  to pediatric nurse and illustrator Rob France. 

“Deli Boys” tells the story of a pair of pampered Pakistani American brothers who lose everything with their convenience store-magnate father suddenly dies, according to the series synopsis. The brothers “are forced to reckon with their Baba’s secret life of crime as they attempt to take up his mantle in the underworld.”

The half-hour, 10-episode series was created by Abdullah Saeed and developed by Jenni Konner and Nora Silver under Jenni Konner Productions. Michelle Nader, who also serves as showrunner, is an executive producer alongside Saeed, Konner and Silver. Nisha Ganatra is executive producer and director on the pilot, with Vali Chandrasekaran as a non-writing executive producer on the pilot.

France began his career behind the scenes, creating successful brands like Kingdom & State and Rachel Parcell, Inc. He gained international fame as the fashion expert on Netflix’s Emmy-winning “Queer Eye,” where he redefined style and representation alongside the Fab 5. 

Beyond “Queer Eye,” he co-hosts Netflix’s design competition series “Next in Fashion” with Gigi Hadid, showcasing his design expertise and mentorship. 

France released his New York Times bestselling memoir “Naturally Tan,” in 2019, he released sharing his journey from a South Asian Muslim household in the U.K. to becoming a global style icon. That same year, he launched the Emmy-nominated YouTube series “Dressing Funny,” bringing humor and fashion to celebrity makeovers.

In 2022, France explored colorism in the BBC documentary “Beauty and the Bleach,” sparking important conversations about identity and representation. He also hosted the U.K. relaunch of “Say Yes to the Dress” for Warner Bros. Discovery, bringing his charm to the beloved franchise.
