Musician Anoushka Shankar, Producer Vivek Tiwary Nominated for Grammy Awards
- The Indian American sitarist, composer and producer is nominated in the Best Global Music Album category for her album “Love Letters,” while the New York-based Tiwary is nominated for Broadway show “Jagged Little Pill.”
Sitarist, composer and producer Anoushka Shankar’s album “Love Letters,” has been nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Global Music Album category, it was announced on Nov. 24. Pitted against Shankar are Antibalas (“Fu Chronicles”), Burna Boy (“Twice as Tall”), and Tinariwen (“Amadjar”).
She is the daughter of legendary sitarist Ravi Shankar and is described as the “singular, genre-defying figure within the classical, contemporary, and progressive world music scenes.”
On her website, Shankar Describes “Love Letter” as “a collection of songs about love, heartbreak and healing.” Undiscover Music says the album “reveals a new direction for Anoushka, a shift in style and subject, and comes at a pivotal time in her career as she signs to her new record label Mercury KX.”
The New York-based Tiwary is a producer of narrative entertainment from Broadway shows to immersive experiences, a media financier/investor, and a New York Times bestselling author, and founder of Tiwary Entertainment Group (TEG).
Also nominated isVivek J. Tiwary in the Best Musical Theater Album for “Little Jagged Pill.” Tiwary is one of the producers of the Broadway show based on Alanis Morissette’s classic album.
Recently, Shakar was named president of the F-List, a website directory of female artists, made freely available in a push to end the gender inequality prevalent in the music business. She collaborated with Alex Heffes to compose music for Mira Nair’s BBC series, “A Suitable Boy,” which will make its North America debut on Acorn TV in December. The first series to close the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival, this sweeping period drama is directed by Mira Nair and adapted by Andrew Davies from Vikram Seth’s bestselling novel of the same name. Seth is one of the series’ executive producers.
His graphic novel, “The Fifth Beatle,” won numerous literary awards including the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award and two Harvey Awards.
Past Broadway productions Tiwary has either been a financier or producer on include “A Raisin In The Sun,” “The Addams Family,” “A Little Night Music,” among others.
Prior to founding TEG and online music education/empowerment company StarPolish, Tiwary held a number of major label music-industry positions and has worked with artists covering the entire musical spectrum. Among many charitable pursuits, he is the co-founder of Musicians On Call, a nonprofit organization that uses music and entertainment to complement the healing process.
Tiwary is a magna cum laude graduate of both the Wharton School of Business and the University of Pennsylvania’s College of Arts and Sciences, and a cum laude graduate of the Collegiate School in New York City. He also holds a filmmaking certificate from The New York Film Academy and is an acting student of Susan Batson/Black Nexxus Acting Studio.
