‘I Don’t Care if You’re a Boy, Girl or in Between’: Did Maitreyi Ramakrishnan Come Out as Bisexual?

Was she being just woke, like many of her generation, or did she just come out as bisexual? Those are the questions that jump at you watching Maitreyi Ramakrishnan’s interview on E! But then, one becomes less uncertain when you read the headline in Pride, a gay magazine, that declared: “ Never Have I Ever’s Maitreyi Ramakrishnan Comes Out, Stays Label Free”.
The boy-crazy ‘Devi’ of the Netflix series that captured the hearts of millions across the world, is more sanguine about her romantic preferences in real life. She just opened up about her real-life love life, saying she is quite ok with any gender.
When it comes to sexuality and dating, the 20-year-old Ramakrishnan prefers to stay away from labels, and doesn’t care if it’s “boy, girl or in between.” The breakout star of Mindy Kaling’s Netflix series made this candid disclosure at a recent appearance on Laverne Cox’s E! series “If We’re Honest.”
Describing herself as a “very much a personality type of person,” she told Cox that “if you get that banter with me, you can read my face perfectly, I don’t care if you’re a boy, girl or in between. You are my person, and you are just the package that the person comes in.” She said. “I’m very much about the personality,” she reiterated, “and I don’t really do labels for attraction,” she added. “It’s just someone who understands me.”
The segment from the interview was immediately picked up by magazines focusing on the LGBTQ community, including Out, Pride and Gay Times.
The young actress, however, is presently single and is not looking for a new romantic partner at the moment. In fact, she told Cox that she was single through the three years of the Netflix series that catapulted her to stardom. “The other day, I said to Mindy [Kaling], ‘I think I’m just more of a badass when I’m single. Right now in my life, I am so happy just doing me and being there for myself.”
