The Annual ‘Himachal Night’ in Sunnyvale, California Showcases the State’s Vibrant Culture and Cuisine
- The cultural program featured a variety of folk dances, songs, skits, quizzes, and a fashion show.
The Bay Area Himachal Group hosted Himachal Night 2026 for the third consecutive year. The event was held in Sunnyvale, California, on May 16.
A capacity crowd comprising people from Himachal Pradesh, along with many non-Himachalis, attended this vibrant and wholesome celebration.
As immigrants, we often live in two worlds — the one we left behind and the one we now call home. Both play an integral role in shaping our identity and personality.
Himachal Pradesh is known for its breathtaking natural beauty, evergreen Deodar forests, and remarkable literacy rate of 99.30% — a monumental achievement despite its largely rural population. The state is also the second-largest producer of apples in India.
But what makes Himachal Pradesh truly exquisite is its people — trusting, hardworking, and warm-hearted. The mountain women, in particular, are admired for both their beauty and resilience. They take pride in living simple, grounded, and organic lives.
The showstopper of the evening was the authentic Himachali Dham, prepared by award-winning chef Bhawna Satya.
The state is also renowned for its spiritual energy and is often referred to as Dev Bhoomi — the Land of the Gods. Himachal is dotted with thousands of temples, from serene hilltop shrines to powerful Shakti Peeths, where people worship both major Hindu deities and localized village gods (Devtas), who are considered the guiding authority of the region.
Himachal Night beautifully reflected the essence of the state. The décor showcased Himachal’s rich flora and fauna. The greenery and vibrant red rhododendrons created a deep sense of belonging for the Himachalis in attendance. Pranav Sood and Misha Bhardwaj worked tirelessly to transform the venue into a magical space.
The cultural program featured a variety of folk dances, songs, skits, quizzes, and a fashion show. The evening began with a traditional Devta procession, followed by a lively Gaddan dance performance. The interactive quiz added excitement and audience participation throughout the evening. One of the highlights of the night was the fashion show, which beautifully showcased the diverse weaves, textiles, and traditional attire of Himachal Pradesh.
We were honored to host two special guest artists. Anushree, a ninth-grade student and a seasoned stage performer, captivated the audience with her melodious voice. Tejas Zodge, a well-known Bay Area musician, mesmerized everyone with his soulful flute performance — an instrument deeply rooted in Himachali folk music traditions. Vaishali Sharma coordinated the cultural show with grace and precision.
The showstopper of the evening was the authentic Himachali Dham, prepared by award-winning chef Bhawna Satya. She cooks with immense love and warmth, and guests were served a delicious variety of traditional dishes at their tables.
No event is successful without the support of the community. Volunteers, participants, sponsors, and attendees all contributed to making the evening unforgettable.
Himachal Night was a heartfelt homage to the vibrant culture of the pristine state of Himachal Pradesh, which was officially formed on January 25, 1971.
