Telangana Student Dies in Alabama of Gunshot Wound; Another Charged With Manslaughter

  • Akhil Sai Mahankali, 25, accidentally pulled the trigger of a gun belonging to Raviteja Goli, believing it was empty.

Indian student Akhil Sai Mahankali died in Alabama earlier this week when a gun he was holding went off accidentally. Another Indian national — Raviteja Goli — has been arrested and charged with manslaughter in his death, and is currently in the Montgomery jail, Montgomery Adviser reported, citing a press release from the police.

Mahankali, 25, of Khammam district in Telangana was a graduate student at Auburn University in Montgomery and worked part-time as an attendant at a nearby gas station. He went there a little over a year ago and did part-time jobs, his parents told the Press Trust of India. Goli worked as a security guard at the same location.

News reports say Goli gave his new gun to Mahankali to hold. Although he had emptied all the cartridges, there was unfortunately one bullet left behind in the chamber. When Mahankali pulled the trigger, the bullet hit his head. Police and fire medics took him to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead, the Montgomery Adviser reported.
