- Amitoj Oberoi, 30, of Franklin Township, New Jersey, who was off-duty at the time of the crash, pleaded guilty on June 18 to two counts of first-degree vehicular homicide.
An Indian American former Edison, New Jersey police officer was sentenced to 15 years in prison for a car crash that killed his two passengers last year in Somerset County. Superior Court Judge Jonathan W. Romankow sentenced Oberoi, 30, of Franklin Township, to two concurrent terms of 15 years in prison on two counts of first-degree vehicular homicide. He was also sentenced to a motor vehicle offense of driving while intoxicated.
The Aug. 27, 2023 crash killed Carlos Perez-Gaytan, 24, of Somerset, and Victor Cabrera-Francisco, 20, of North Brunswick. Oberoi, who was employed as an Edison Police Officer and was off-duty at the time of the crash, pleaded guilty on June 18 to two counts of first-degree vehicular homicide.
Oberoi was speeding in the 2007 Audi Q7 when he lost control of the car, causing it to leave the road and hit several trees, lamp posts, and a utility pole, nj.com reported. One passenger was thrown from the car and pronounced dead at the scene while another had to be extricated from the vehicle and later died of his injuries. A front-seat passenger was treated for minor injuries and released, authorities said. An investigation found that he was over the legal Blood Alcohol Concentration (B.A.C.) limit at the time of the incident.
Oberoi is required to serve 85% of his sentence before he becomes eligible for parole.
