Another Indian American Falls Victim to Gun Violence. Temple University Student Shot Dead in Philadelphia

  • An unknown assailant, still at large, shot Jude Chacko in the forehead over the weekend.

Jude Chacko, a 21-year-old Indian American student was shot dead by an unknown assailant in Philadelphia on 29 May. Chacko was shot dead while he was returning from work during the overnight hours on Saturday night leading into Sunday. He was shot in the forehead. The murder took place on Cumberland Street in Port Richmond.

Chacko, a student of Temple University, is the son of Roy Chacko and Asja Chacko who immigrated to the U.S. more than 30 years ago.
It’s unclear what time the shooting took place due to a lack of witnesses and surveillance cameras in the area, but a pedestrian found the victim on the ground a bit past 8 a.m. Sunday morning, local ABC news reported.

It is also unclear what Chacko was doing the night he was killed, but police suspect robbery to be the motive. News reports said his wallet and a firearm, for which he had a permit to carry, were both missing.

Chacko is remembered as a sweet and loving young man who was very involved in his local church community in the Bustleton section of Philadelphia, according to news reports.

“I watched Jude become a fine young gentleman, and to witness these events over the weekend was just horrific,” Monsignor Joseph Duncan from St. Albert the Great Roman Catholic Church, was quoted as saying in the ABC report.
