The Doctor’s In: Indian American Cardiologist Sion Roy Lunches Campaign for California State Senate

Indian American physician Sion Roy today launched his campaign for California state Senate in District 24, representing West Los Angeles and Santa Monica. Roy, a cardiologist and vice chair of the Santa Monica College Board, is running for the seat currently held by Sen. Ben Allen, who’s termed out in 2026.
In his announcement, Roy, 44, who lost his family home in the Palisades fire, promised to fight for “better access to healthcare, increased educational opportunities, and recovery and rebuilding from the devastating fire. He said he will “cut the red tape” in Sacramento, and “bring resources back home to help our community rebuild—because I’m living this challenge alongside you.” He described himself as “a champion who will bring real solutions to these challenges.”

A public health expert, Roy is a an associate professor at Harbor UCLA Public Hospital in Torrance where he has has mentored countless students while advancing patient care for underserved communities. As the youngest ever president of the Los Angeles County Medical Association, his expertise was sought by elected officials to help guide the region through the COVID-19 pandemic, and shape policies that prioritize equity, accessibility, and the well-being of all residents.

Elected to the Santa Monica College Board in 2018 and re-elected in 2022, Roy currently serves as vice chair, where he championed workforce programs like the Certified Nursing Assistant & Home Health Aide Certificate programs and led the opening of Santa Monica College’s new Malibu campus. A longtime advocate for K-12 advancement, he served as PTA President for Webster Elementary in Malibu, spearheaded community-building initiatives, and helped pass Measure MM to improve local schools.
Roy earned his B.A. from Johns Hopkins University and his M.D. from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, after completing a year of service in AmeriCorps. He lives in Malibu with his wife, Kathy, and their son, Kiran.
