The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has appointed Sivaram Ghorakavi as the new Deputy Chief Information Officer, effective today (June 3). The position is a key Senior Executive Service (SES) managerial position at the agency, the EEOC said. The Indian American will also serve as the EEOC’s Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer.

In his new role, Ghorakavi will “manage daily information technology operations and provide professional direction and leadership for technology projects and partnerships,” EEOC said.

According to EEOC Chair Charlotte A. Burrows, Ghorakavi’s “appointment reflects our confidence in his demonstrated abilities and experience to help lead our agency in both digital transformation and adapting to emerging technologies, both for internal processes and in our law enforcement effort.”

In a statement, Ghorakavi said the deputy chief information officer is “a leader who values creation and drives digital transformation and automation aligned to the EEOC’s critical mission of ensuring equal employment opportunity.” He added that the “success of this role depends on helping people understand both the benefits and risks of using technology, including AI.”
