Ohio Indian Americans Come Together to Support Black Lives Matter Movement

Indian Americans in Cleveland, Ohio, participated in a protest rally at the Indian Cultural Garden on June 14. The rally was organized by Indians for Black Lives Matter. The group aims to show their collective support and solidarity with the black community and the Black Lives Matter movement. Among speakers at the June 14 rally were Subodh Chandra, human rights attorney who worked on the Tamir Rice case, and 14-year-old Ethan Khorana, who is very active in the social justice and equality movement in Cleveland. Chandra told WOSU Public Media that the solidarity between Northeast Ohio’s Black and South Asian communities is important. “Our successful existence in this great nation has occurred because we are standing on the shoulders of the sacrifices made by the African-American community,” he said. According to WOSU, the group plans to hold eight events this year “to attract 5,000 more people to the movement in Northeast Ohio.” They are launching a petition drive in support of police reform legislation currently before the U.S. Senate.
