Singer and songwriter Jason Derulo has jalebi on his mind. Not only did he release a song “Jalebi Baby,” he recently showed off his cooking skills as he made the spiral sugary sweet in a video he posted on TikTok and Instagram.
“Jalebi Baby” is originally composed and sung by Canadian rapper, singer-songwriter, and producer Hitesh Sharma, known professionally as Tesher. In Derulo’s version, in which he collaborated with Tesher, the lyrics are slightly changed but the chorus remains the same. Not only is the song topping the charts but has become one of the top hits on every music streaming site.
Last week, Derulo sent his fans in a spin when he posted a video on TikTok and Instagram, where he’s seen showing off his jalebi-making skills. Derulo and Tesher’s “Jalebi Baby” song plays in the background while Derulo. “For those of you still wondering what a Jalebi is,” Derulo captioned the video. First, he prepares the batter, adding a bit of color and other ingredients. He then poured the mixture into a tube before moving his hand to give jalebis their trademark shape. Once he finishes frying them, he soaks jalebis in sugar syrup. After serving them on a plate, he pulls out chocolate syrup to drizzle on the jalebis, but he pushes it aside saying, “Not this time.”
Tesher shared Derulo’s video on Twitter. “What is a jalebi?” is the #1 question me and @jasonderulo get these days. Now you know!”
Derulo’s fans were surprised as how easily he made a dish considered a delicacy and hard to make. “Aint expecting this at alll!!! Im east indian and never even tried to make this and its one of my favorite indian delicacies,” one Insta user wrote. “Ahha..!!! Finally a JALEBI for JALEBI..! You’ve nailed it mate..!! India is proud of you,” wrote another. “Are Jason ji maja agaya,” an Instagram user replied to the video, while another one said Derulo was “educating the world on a jalebi.”
Many Indian celebrities have also shared videos of them grooving to “Jalebi Baby.” Television star turned Bollywood actress Mouni Roy stunned her fans by dancing to a song in a shimmering LBD (little black dress) by Nadine Merabi – a luxury womenswear brand. Others like Bengali actress Oindrila Sen and Munmun Dutta aka Babita Ji from “Tarak Mehta Ka Ulta Chashma” also posted their “Jalebi Baby” dance videos. Lacescotch, a fashion, lifestyle and entertainment blog posted a video of Alia Bhatt and her friends at a wedding performing to “Jalebi Baby.”
