Bangladeshi American Roohi Rustum Appointed as National Organizing Director of Biden’s Re-election Campaign

  • She is first LGBTQ person and first woman of color to serve as national organizing director for a general election presidential campaign.

President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign has named Roohi Rustum its national organizing director, which involves leading the campaign’s organizing across all 50 states. The Bangladeshi-American is the first LGBTQ person and first woman of color to serve as national organizing director for a general election presidential campaign, according to a campaign press release. 

Rustum previously worked at the Democratic National Committee as the interim national organizing director. In that role she oversaw Biden-Harris’ early organizing investments in Arizona and Wisconsin to build capacity and reach critical young, Black, and Latino voters online and in person. She was also in charge of the volunteer-driven GOTV efforts for critical 2023 races such as the Kentucky governor’s race and the Virginia state legislature.

During the 2022 midterm election cycle, she served as the regional director for the Sun Belt battlegrounds, and as national relational organizing director during the 2020 Biden-Harris campaign. She also worked on organizing infrastructure on Pete Buttigieg’s presidential campaign.
