4 Sikh Americans Among 8 Killed in Mass Shooting at FedEx Facility in Indianapolis

  • Police confirmed the identity of the gunman, Brandon Scott Hole, a 19-year-old former employee.

Four Sikh Americans are among eight killed at a mass shooting at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis, Indiana, April 15. In a statement issued on April 16 on its social media handles, the Sikh Coalition said “it is deeply saddened to learn that Sikh community members are among those injured and killed by the gunman. Our hearts and prayers are with their families, and we are in touch with community leaders, government and law enforcement officials to learn more.” 

IndyStar has confirmed the name of one of the eight people who died in the mass shooting at the FedEx facility April 15 night. She is Amarjeet Kaur Johal, a mother and grandmother. Her grandson confirmed her death on Twitter.

In late breaking news, the other Sikh victims have been identified as Jasvinder Kaur, 64, Jaswinder Singh, 68, and Amarjit Skhon, 48.

Authorities have not yet said whether bias is a factor in the gunman’s motive. An estimated 8,000 to 10,000 Sikh Americans live in Indiana, according to the Sikh Coalition. 

On April 16, police confirmed the identity of the gunman, Brandon Scott Hole, a 19-year-old former employee, at the FedEx Ground station on the southwest side of the city. The gunman was found dead in what is believed to be a suicide nearby, police said, according to news reports.

FBI Indianapolis Special Agent in Charge Paul Keenan said on April 16 that agents found Hole had “no racially motivated violent extremism ideology,” when they interviewed him in 2020, Indy Star reported. 

“A shotgun was seized at his residence. Based on items observed in the suspect’s bedroom at that time, he was interviewed by the FBI in April 2020,” the report said. “No Racially Motivated Violent Extremism (RMVE) ideology was identified during the course of the assessment and no criminal violation was found. The shotgun was not returned to the suspect.”
