ZEE5 Global to Stream ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’ on Indian Revolutionary’s 141st Birth Anniversary

Streaming platform ZEE5 Global will launch the digital premiere of “Swatantrya Veer Savarkar,” coinciding with the 141st birth anniversary of the revolutionary Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, who played a crucial role in India’s struggle for independence against British rule. “The biographical period drama promises an honest portrayal of Savarkar’s extraordinary life, shedding light on his relentless struggle against British colonial rule,” ZEE5 Global said in a press release.
Directed by and starring Randeep Hooda, the film will be available in Hindi and Marathi starting May 28. Supporting him is Ankita Lokhande, as his wife Yamuna bai Savarkar. “The film narrates Savarkar’s story solely from his perspective, fearlessly embracing his ideals and beliefs that were initially contentious but eventually found their way into the fabric of modern India,” the ZEE5 Global press release said.
According to Archana Anand, Chief Business Officer at ZEE5 Global, with the digital premiere of the film, the streaming platform aims “to highlight the life of one of India’s most influential yet controversial revolutionaries.” She said “this film is part of our ongoing effort to cater to distinct viewer preferences worldwide, providing content that resonates, educates, and inspires. We believe in the power of storytelling to celebrate unsung heroes and bring their remarkable legacies to a global audience.”
Hooda said he’s “really looking forward” to the world digital premiere of the film. He admitted of learning “a lot more about this inspiring hero” after he started working on this project. “I want to share this film with as many people as possible to counter the false narrative spread in popular culture to bury his legacy,” he said. “It was an honor playing the life of this influential yet maligned revolutionary who has left such rich and inspiring legacy behind,” he said. He urged “every Indian to watch this film to know the hidden chapters of Indian History and decide for themselves if he was deservedly Veer or not.”
Lokahnde said she’s “truly honored” to have broughtYamuna bai’s story to life.”Portraying the wife of the legendary Veer Savarkar, was a truly fulfilling experience as an actor as this is a character unlike anything I have essayed before,” she said. During filming, she had the opportunity to learn about Yamuna Bai, and she was “blown away with the kind of strength and support she showed towards her husband,” she said. “I learned so much being her,” she said, adding that the role has “definitely helped me to grow as an actress, and I hope to get more of such opportunities to portray such women on screen in my upcoming films as well.” She feels “privileged to be a part of a project that entertains, educates and celebrates the unsung heroes of our history.”
