Controversial Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has announced that she will play the powerful and first Indian female Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in a political drama, to be directed by Sai Kabir.
Kangana, in a media statement, stated that the period film won’t be an out-and-out biopic, but would cover important moments in Indian political history including Operation Blue Star and The Emergency.
Sharing the announcement with her fans on Twitter, Ranaut tweeted, “Happy to announce my dear friend Sai Kabir and I are collaborating on a political drama. Produced by Manikarnika Films. Written and Directed by Sai Kabir.”
Sharing a throwback picture from one of her old photoshoots, for which she had dressed up as the former PM on social media, Ranaut said, “This is a photoshoot about iconic women I did in the beginning of my career, little did I know one day I will get to play the iconic leader on screen.”
The actor also told The Hindu, “Yes, we are working on the project, and the script is in the final stages. It is not the biopic of Indira Gandhi. It is a grand period film. To be precise, it is a political drama that will help my generation to understand (the) socio-political landscape of current India.”
Speaking about the period film that will be mounted on a big scale, she added that “the film is based on a book”, although she did not mention the name. The likes of Rajiv Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri among others will be portrayed in the movie. Ranaut added that “Many prominent actors will be part of this film and of course I am looking forward to playing the most iconic leader that we have had in the history of Indian politics.”
Filmmaker Sai Kabir, who has already worked with Ranaut earlier in “Revolver Rani,” will write the story and screenplay, while Ranaut will serve as the producer.Ranaut’s next film to hit the silver screen will be the action-adventure movie “Dhaakad,” in which she plays a female assassin. The Bollywood star also recently wrapped up work on another powerful female politician, former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa in the much-awaited “Thalaivi.”
