Suchana Seth, Who is Accused of Murdering Her 4-year-old Son on Holiday in Goa, was a Harvard Fellow

The 39-year-old Indian woman accused of murdering her 4-year-old son was a Harvard fellow with an impressive resume. Suchana Seth, 39, CEO of The Mindful AI Lab, an artificial intelligence startup in Bangalore, reportedly stuffed her son’s body into her luggage after killing him at the Sol Banyan Grande’ in Candolim in North Goa. 

According to The Economic Times, she raised suspicions when she asked her hotel to arrange a taxi to drive her home to Bengaluru, which is approximately a 14-hour drive. The front desk staff at the hotel suggested she fly home instead, citing both the cost-effectiveness and convenience of traveling, but the authorities said she insisted on traveling by road, the Economic Times report said, citing police. Seth was en route to Bengaluru at the time of her arrest following a probe launched after the hotel staff found blood in the room she rented. 

Seth’s LinkedIn page indicates that the AI ethics expert and data scientist studied at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, as a fellow from September 2017 to August 2018, and then as an affiliate for a year. Before that she was the Ford – Mozilla Open Web Fellow at the Data & Society Research Institute in New York for five months. Her LinkedIn profile included links from articles praising her work in AI, including a news story listing her as one of the top “100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics for 2021.”

While it’s not clear how Seth killed her son, Business Today reported that police believe “the murder was premeditated as empty cough syrup bottles were found in Seth’s room.” There’s also speculation that she might have used a towel or a pillow to kill the boy.

It is believed that Seth’s divorce from her husband Venkat Raman could have been a motive in the murder. Raman, an AI developer who was away in Indonesia had a video call with his four-year-old son on Jan. 7, shortly before he died, NDTV reported. The couple had filed for a divorce in 2020 after being married for 10 years. A court had granted Raman permission to meet his son on Sundays.
