Rapper Megan Thee Stallion Makes Oscar Debut in Gown Designed by Indian Couturière Gaurav Gupta

  • A few days earlier, fellow artist, Cardi B chose to wear the designer’s custom sculpted number crafted in nude diaphanous organza for the remix video of “No Love.”

Rapper Megan Thee Stallion made her Oscar debut in a Gaurav Gupta gown inspired by marine ecology. “The silvery-blue gown featured a strapless bodice coupled with a plunging sweetheart neckline, a snatched waist with a creative peek-a-boo cut-out detail and a generous ruffled trail,” Vogue said, adding that “the creation took over 1500 man-hours to make.” She paired the gown with sparkling heels by Stuart Weitzman and dainty diamond baubles by Lorraine Schwartz.. 

The “Sweetest Pie” singer is not the only one who chose the couturière’s creation. A few days ago her pal, rapper Cardi B chose to wear a custom sculpted number crafted in nude diaphanous organza for the remix video of “No Love” with Summer Walker and SZA. 

The dress is made with infinite sculptures molded in layers of nude diaphanous organza,” and features “a deep neckline, side thigh-high slit, skirt forming into a floor-grazing train, and a larger than life twirled piece attached to the back of the dress, Gupta said in an Instagram post. “In an endless field of roses. Cardi represents the element of ‘air’ in the ‘Gaurav Gupta Amorphous Shapeshifter Sculptural Outfit.’ The brand’s indigenous sculpting technique transforms into infinite shapes that bring her cosmic character to life.”

In an interview with Vogue, Gupta revealed that the whole concept of the music video was about “elements of nature.” He said his collaboration with Cardi B was “really beautiful because it’s like our conceptual signature technique that’s been worn by Cardi B who is one of the most iconic artists of our time. It’s a really nice proud moment, I am really chuffed about it.”

A leader in couture and experiential space design for the last 15 years, Gupta has carved its own new world in the global couture space. His website describes him as “future primitive,” and calls his design language “a composition of what might be and what was.”

He graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, and immediately thereafter, his work was instantly picked up, first as work experience with renowned Turkish designer Hussein Chalayan. Subsequently, recognition followed with Makuhari Grand Prix, Mittelmoda, Altaroma Altamoda where he was variously awarded for being the future of couture

In the present, his sculptural couture has walked the red carpets of the Emmys, Cannes and Golden Globes besides dressing eminent artists in music, cinema, fashion and art around the world. A few of them are actresses Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Sonam Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Mexican singer Thalia, new-age rapper Saweetie, former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo, Nicole Scherzinger, Nana Akua Addo, Lady Victoria Hervey, Gigi Gorgeous and virtual influencer Noonoouri.

Gaurav Gupta Man became a reality in 2018 with an opening show in collaboration with GQ India and is popular among stars and clientele alike including Ranveer Singh, Ayushmann Khurrana, Shahid Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhotra, film director Karan Johar, rapper Wyclef Jean and the Latin boy band CNCO.

He was also invited to showcase at London’s Animal Ball 2019, hosted by The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall. In other collaborations, Gupta’s installation ‘Tunnel of Infinity’ was a part of Santati, a traveling art exhibition commemorating 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi which opened at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai. He was also the exclusive designer to collaborate with Vogue and IBM to create India’s first garment based on Artificial Intelligence. His latest venture, Gaurav Gupta Occasions Fine Jewelry redefines precious couture jewelry.
