Destiny’s Child: 21-Year-Old Indo-Canadian TikTok Star Megha Thakur Dies, Reportedly, In a Road Accident

  • She had more than 930,000 followers and was well-known for promoting self-confidence and body positivity. In her last message, she wrote: “YOU’RE in charge of your destiny. Remember that.”

Indo-Canadian TikTok star Megha Thakur is dead. She passed away “unexpectedly” on Nov. 24,” her parents posted on Instagram. “It is with heavy hearts we announce the light of our life, our kind, caring, and beautiful daughter, Megha Thakur, suddenly and unexpectedly passed away on November 24, 2022, in the early morning hours,” read the post. Thakur’s parents did not immediately reveal the cause of their daughter’s death. However, a website called Social Telecast reported that the young woman died in a road accident. These claims haven’t been verified by any other publication.

A student at Western University, Thakur grew up in Brampton, Ontario. She had more than 930,000 followers on TikTok and was well known for promoting self-confidence and body positivity.

In an Oct 2021 interview with The Western Gazette, she said she began posting on TikTok as a way to express her individuality and speak about things that she is passionate about. “If it wasn’t for the events that transpired with COVID[-19], I would not be where I am right now,” she told the publication. “I had the privilege of making my glass half full rather than half glass empty.”

No wonder, “Be you, be confident,” was her most famous phrase in her videos. However, she admitted that getting the confidence was a journey in itself. She grew up with a “completely polar opposite culture” to Canada, she said, adding that her “Indian roots” are a significant part of her identity.“I didn’t have that many friends growing up, I didn’t really fit in anywhere,” she explains. “I struggled to find not only my identity, but my voice.” Noting that she did not post “with the intention of blowing up,” she told the paper. “But I think without even thinking too hard about the long-winded message that I wanted to convey, people saw it within my short, 15 to 30-second videos.”

Her final TikTok message, posted Nov. 18, featured her walking in New York City with the caption: “YOU’RE in charge of your destiny. Remember that.”
