A Wrinkle in Weight: Mindy Kaling Has Lost More Than 40 Pounds With Exercise and Portion Control

  • The 43-year-old Indian American writer, producer, and actor stuns in a low-cut black vintage Versace skirt suit at the premiere of 2nd season of ‘The Sex Life of College Girls.’

Mindy Kaling has been making heads turn with her svelte look. The 43-year-old Indian American writer, producer, and actor has been on a weight loss journey for the past few months and has been looking trimmer and fitter. She has lost “more than 40 pounds after learning to enjoy exercising and eating smaller portions,” according to a report in The Guardian.

Last week, the fashionista made another style statement at a party celebrating the upcoming second season of HBO Max’s “The Sex Life of College Girls.” Dressed in “a black vintage Versace skirt suit, featuring short sleeves and a square-neckline highlighted by a low-cut bustier-style look,” The Guardian said Kaling “looked slender as she showed off her tiny waistline. Her blazer was accented by “double button closures at the front just under the bust,” which she matched with “ a fitted calf-length skirt and black stiletto heels.”

The premiere included ‘Career Night’ and ‘Homecoming’ themed parties at events co-hosted by BIPOC-owned media brand Phenomenal and its founder Meena Harris.

Earlier this year, Kaling spoke to Entertainment Tonight about her weight loss journey. Stressing that she “didn’t really do anything differently,” Kaling said she eats what she likes. “If I do any kind of restrictive diet, it never really works for me. I just eat less of it.” Wishing that “there was something more juicy or dynamic” about the way that she” lost a little bit of weight,” she told Entertainment Tonight, “but that’s the way I’ve done it.”

But Kaling, according to Us magazine, refuses to give up her favorites including sushi and cocktails. She just enjoys those things in moderation. “When the “Wrinkle in Time” star dines out, she orders what she really wants and just eats half. Explained Kaling: “I’ve come to terms with the fact that I don’t have to eat everything on there,” the report said.

After the birth of her first child, her daughter Kathrine, Kaling had to shoot a movie two months later, and pretty much ate “grilled salmon and sautéed spinach,” for three months to lose the weight. However, after giving birth to Spencer, Kaling didn’t “have those pressures” to face as quarantine continued. “It was this almost extended maternity leave,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “I wasn’t going to be on camera, the studios were shut down,” she said.

In an interview with People magazine, she admitted feeling “really scrutinized” during her first pregnancy.”I think that it was such a joy to spend the last seven months of my pregnancy under the cover of just nobody was out, nobody was taking photos.”

“The Sex Life of College Girls” was co-created by Kaling and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” writer Justin Noble. The series chronicles the lives of four roommates – Bela Malhotra, Leighton Murray, Kimberly Finkle and Whitney Chase – as they embark on their freshman year at Essex College, a fictional institution set in a New England town.

The first season shows how these ladies, who are away from home for the first time in their lives, are trying to figure themselves out mentally, emotionally, and sexually.

Bela Malhotra, played by Amrit Kaur, is a New Jersey native as eager to break into comedy as she is to shed the conservative constraints of her Desi upbringing; Leighton Murray (Regina Rapp), is a closeted uptown snob; Kimberly Finkle (Pauline Chalamet) is a scholarship student from a small town in Arizona; and Whitney Chase (Alyah Chanelle Scott), is a college athlete whose U.S. Senator mom overshadows her arrival on campus.

The second season is set to premiere on HBO Mx on Nov. 17.
