- Brindha Shunmuganathan, 39, from Georgia, was knocked down by a large wave, and caught in the high surf and raked over a bed of rocks.
An Indian American woman vacationing in California with her family was killed after she was caught in the high surf conditions at a beach in San Luis Obispo County, in the Central Coast area of the state. The incident occurred on Dec. 30, when Brindha Shunmuganathan, 39, from Georgia, went with family to the beach access area near the Sea Crest Hotel in Pismo Beach.
She was taking pictures with her two young children when a large wave came up and knocked them down, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office. The family was able to rescue the two kids quickly, but the mother was caught in the high surf and was raked over a bed of rocks, Fox26 News reported.
She was eventually rescued by nearby people who then performed CPR until medical first responders arrived and took over, but she was pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office added. The cause of death is still under investigation.
At the time, San Luis Obispo and the rest of the Central Coast was given a high surf warning, with businesses and beaches hit hard with large surges, rogue waves and flooding.
