Indian Store Clerk From Punjab Fatally Shot During Armed Robbery in California

An Indian American store clerk in California was fatally shot during an armed robbery last week. Parveen Singh, 27, of Hesperia was murdered on the job at a Mobil gas station on June 29, when the suspect, described only as “a 16-year-old from Victorville, robbed the store, and then took off running,” according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. When deputies arrived, they found Singh on the ground with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to the hospital where he later died, the sheriff’s office said. 

Singh, who hailed from Punjab, moved to the U.S. in 2017, his uncle Suran Singh told The Indian Express. He said his was waiting for his permanent residency so that he could visit his mother in India. His younger brother works at the same store, the report said. 

The suspect was found about a block away, the sheriff’s office said. He was booked into the High Desert Juvenile Hall in Apple Valley where he faces “murder and robbery charges, it added.

Customers have made a memorial for Singh outside of the store. They told ABC 7 that Singh was “an absolute pleasure.” Emily Silva, a regular customer at the store, told the news outlet that Singh was”really nice.” Another described him as “a cool guy,” who was respectful to people. “It’s just unfortunate that this happened.” Joey Rey, another customer, described Singh as someone who “saw the light in everything.”
