Indian American Teen Fatally Shot by an ’18-year-old Man’ in Gilroy, California

  • Jackson Kavil, 17, was taken to a local hospital where he died.

An Indian American family in Gilroy, California is mourning the tragic shooting of their teenage son. Jackson Kavil, who was shot on July 20 was taken to Saint Louise Hospital where he “immediately received life-saving measures but eventually died of injuries, “ The Mercury News reported, citing police.

A Facebook post by Jasmine Kavil confirmed the death. “Jackson passed away Thursday night,” read the post. “He was a comedian who loved to put smiles on everyone’s face. Jackson was genuine and had a huge heart. He will be deeply missed.” The post, made on behalf of the family, thanked everyone for their love and support.” We couldn’t be surrounded by a more caring community. We appreciate the outpour of love and patience.” 

Jackson Kavil is the son of Sunny Kavil, who owns a restaurant in Gilroy. His mother Rani is a nurse, according to reports in Indian media.

Meanwhile, The Mercury News reported that the suspect — “an 18-year-old man” —  in Kavil’s murder has been arrested. “An initial investigation determined the shooting happened in the 2100 block of Columbine Court,” the report said. No other details about the incident were reported.
