Sarayu Blue Joins Netflix Series Based on Jhumpa Lahiri’s ‘Unaccustomed Earth’ in Leading Role
- Acclaimed Indian American actress brings dramatic depth to series following breakout performance in “Expats"
Sarayu Blue, the versatile Indian American actress who garnered critical acclaim for her performance in Amazon Prime Video’s “Expats,” has been cast in a pivotal role in Netflix’s highly anticipated adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri’s Pulitzer Prize-winning short story collection “Unaccustomed Earth.”
Blue will play Ruma, described by Netflix as “a self-assured and ambitious Bengali American mother who is the steadfast breadwinner of her family, Variety reported. An accomplished attorney with uncompromising standards, she balances the chaos of a household full of dreamers and artists with unshakable practicality. Her warm smile masks the quiet strain of carrying more than her share, a truth few ever notice.”
The casting announcement comes as the latest addition to an ensemble that includes previously announced stars Freida Pinto, Indraneil Sengupta, Adi Roy and Iyla Sundarsingh Mckaig in the eight-episode drama series.
“Unaccustomed Earth” is described as an “epic, soapy and culturally vibrant drama about a tight-knit Indian American community navigating love, desire and belonging,” according to Netflix. It’s set in an insular Indian American circle in Cambridge, Mass., and follows a star-crossed romance between a devoted wife and her long-lost love.
Lahiri’s 2008 collection, which won the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award, explores themes of cultural displacement, generational conflict, and the complex navigation of identity within immigrant families. The stories primarily focus on Bengali-American characters grappling with questions of belonging and tradition in contemporary America.
Sarayu Rao, also known as Sarayu Blue, is perhaps best known for her recurring role as Angela on the Fox sitcom “Sons of Tucson,” as well as Dr. Sydney Napur on David E. Kelley’s “Monday Mornings” on TNT.
The Netflix adaptation marks the second major screen treatment of Lahiri’s work, following the 2006 film adaptation of her novel “The Namesake,” directed by Mira Nair and starring Kal Penn, Tabu, and the late Irrfan Khan.
Blue’s Rising Star
While perhaps more well-known for her sharp comedic timing, she has also shown her great range in dramas, as seen in the Amazon limited series, “Expats,” starring opposite Nicole Kidman, and directed by Lulu Wang. Her performance in “Expats” as Hilary Starr, a complex expatriate wife navigating personal trauma and cultural displacement in Hong Kong, demonstrated her ability to handle nuanced dramatic material.
Sarayu Rao (born March 7, 1975), also known as Sarayu Blue, is an American actress. She is perhaps best known for her recurring role as Angela on the Fox sitcom “Sons of Tucson,” as well as Dr. Sydney Napur on David E. Kelley’s “Monday Mornings” on TNT. She was part of the main cast in both “Monday Mornings” and “No Tomorrow,” then led Aseem Batra’s “I Feel Bad,” which was canceled by NBC after on season in 2019.
Her film debut came in 2007’s “Lions for Lambs,” where she appeared alongside Robert Redford, Tom Cruise, and Meryl Streep, establishing her credibility in high-profile productions early in her career.
“Unaccustomed Earth,” the eight-episode drama series hails from writer Madhuri Shekar (“3 Body Problem,” “The Nevers”), director Ritesh Batra (“The Lunchbox,” “Photograph”) and executive producer John Wells (“The West Wing,” “ER,” “The Pitt”).
Jhumpa Lahiri herself will serve as an executive producer, alongside Erica Saleh, Erin Jontow (John Wells Productions), and Celia Costas. Batra will direct the first two episodes of the series. Warner Bros. Television, where Wells and his John Wells Productions is under an overall deal, is the studio behind the series.
The involvement of Lahiri as an executive producer ensures authentic representation of the Bengali-American experience that forms the heart of her literary work. Shekar, who previously worked on Netflix’s acclaimed “3 Body Problem,” brings experience in adapting complex source material for television.
A Timely Exploration of Identity
The “Unaccustomed Earth” adaptation arrives at a moment when stories exploring immigrant experiences and cultural identity have found increasing resonance with mainstream audiences. The series promises to delve into the intricate dynamics of a Cambridge-based Indian-American community, examining how traditional values intersect with contemporary American life.
For Blue, the role of Ruma represents another opportunity to portray the complexities of the South Asian diaspora experience, building on the groundwork she established in “Expats.” Her casting suggests Netflix’s commitment to authentic representation in adapting Lahiri’s deeply personal and culturally specific narratives.
The series is currently in production, with a release date yet to be announced by Netflix.
