Comedian, YouTube sensation and late-night host Lilly Singh has won a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Variety or Talk Show Episode for her “A Little Late With Lilly Singh” segment, “Lilly Responds to Comments About Her Sexuality.”

The 32nd edition of the annual awards were held on April 8, honoring media for fair, accurate, and inclusive representation of the LGBTQ+ community. This year’s virtual event, hosted by actor Niecy Nash, was streamed on YouTube.

“In addition to celebrating the winners, the ceremony highlighted pressing issues affecting the LGBTQ community, such as the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, HIV awareness and the epidemic of violence against transgender women of color,” according to a NBC report.

In her acceptance speech, Singh expressed her solidarity with LGBTQ youth. “I see you. I recognize you. You are valid,” she said. Noting that she “came out relatively late in Life,” Singh talked about how there is “a stigma attached to being your true authentic self,” in some cultures like the South Asian culture.

“I always think that if I was younger and I saw someone on TV who looked like me, that was out and proud about it, maybe I would’ve gotten here faster,” she said. “I just want to say to everyone at home that looks like me: I am out. I am loud. I am proud. I love myself.” And although “the journey to get here was tough it was so worth it. So I want to say that I see you. I recognize you. You are valid. You are beautiful. Nothing about you needs to change.”
