Indian American Usha Sahay Joins DOE as Speechwriter for Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm

  • A former editor with several publications, she previously wrote speeches for Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

Indian American Usha Sahay has joined the Department of Energy as chief speechwriter for Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm. She previously worked in the Department of Defense where she worked for Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin as his speechwriter. 

Before her government service, Sahay held editing roles at a variety of media outlets, according to her DOE bio. She was senior editor at Politico Magazine; managing editor at War on the Rocks; a home page editor at The Wall Street Journal, and a news editor at HuffPost. 

She also created, wrote, and hosted “A Most Terrible Weapon,” a historical podcast about the first years of the nuclear age. She began her career at the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation and its sister organization Council for a Livable World.

She holds a B.A. in history and international relations from Columbia University and a Master in Public Policy from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.
