Raj Parekh to Become First Indian American to Serve as U.S. Attorney for Eastern District of Virginia

  • The career federal prosecutor will replace incumbent G. Zachary Terwilliger who resigned on Jan. 5, ahead of Joe Biden taking office.

Raj Parekh, the First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA), will serve as Acting U.S. Attorney after incumbent G. Zachary Terwilliger leaves his post next week. Parekh, a career federal prosecutor, will become the first Indian American and minority member in the 232-year history of the Office to serve as EDVA’s U.S. Attorney (acting or otherwise). Terwilliger, who announced his resignation  on Jan. 5, is moving to a private white-collar defense firm starting Jan. 15, a few days before Joe Biden is set to be sworn in as the next president of the United States.

Prior to becoming the First Assistant U.S. Attorney, Parekh served as the Assistant United States Attorney in the National Security & International Crime Unit in the Eastern District of Virginia, according to his LinkedIn profile. He joined the Eastern District of Virginia in 2016 as Special Assistant United States Attorney, National Security/Terrorism Cases. 

Before that, Parekh served in the U.S. Department of Justice as a trial attorney in the Counter Terrorism section in the National Security Division. From 2014 to 2015, he worked at IBM as counsel and senior attorney for Global Risk & Investigations. He joined IBM after serving as the Assistant United States Attorney for two years. He also served at the Central Intelligence Agency as Assistant General Counsel, Litigation & Counterterrorism.

Parekh graduated from University of Pennsylvania Law School in 2007, where he was the executive editor of the Journal of International Law & Policy. He has a Certificate in Business & Policy from University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business and a BA in Economics and International Affairs in 2003, magna cum laude honors.
