Indian American Journalist Megha Rajagopalan Joins International Investigations Team of The New York Times

The New York Times is launching a London-based international investigations team, which includes Indian American Megha Rajagopalan, previously a Pulitzer winner at BuzzFeed. With this, The Times is bolstering its international investigations efforts and an expanded commitment to global investigative journalism outside the United States. The team so far includes two accomplished investigative reporters from The Times staff, and two new investigative correspondents — Rajagopalan and Justin Scheck, a veteran investigative reporter and foreign correspondent.

Rajagopalan joins The Times from BuzzFeed News, where she shared in a Pulitzer Prize for international reporting last year for exposing the system of camps set up by the Chinese government to detain Uyghur Muslims. The stories combined satellite imagery and novel architectural modeling with on-the-ground reporting.

Rajagopalan was the first journalist to find and visit such a camp — work for which she won the Human Rights Press Award in 2018. A year later, she and her colleagues won a Mirror Award for an investigation uncovering the links between Facebook and religious violence in Sri Lanka.
