Tony Shaloub’s Drama ‘Monk’ Being Remade for Indian Audience
- Although no cast members have been announced yet, those involved in the production say the adaptation is uniquely fresh, especially for those who may have seen the original.
The Indian remake of the U.S. drama “Monk” is in production, although no cast members have been announced yet, Deadline has reported. The series will be available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar and Hulu. It is being produced by Banijay Asia in collaboration with NBCUniversal Formats.
It marks the first adaptation of the series, about a detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder, in South Asia. However, a Turkish “Monk” has been made previously.
The original series ran on USA Network from 2002 to 2009 and “spawned a movie that played on Peacock last year,” as reported by Deadline. It followed Adrian Monk (Tony Shalom) and his assistants Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram) and Natalie Teeger (Traylor Howard) and their work with the San Francisco Police Department on unconventional cases.
In a statement, Sumanta Bose, Business Head HSM and Content Head Disney+ Hotstar (Hindi), called “Monk” an “exciting fit for our platform, with its captivating mix of humor, mystery, and emotional depth.” Noting that they have “attempted to make this adaptation feel rooted and Indian,” Bose said the series is thus “uniquely fresh for our audiences including those who may have seen the original.”
