Mindy Kaling’s hit Netflix coming-of-age comedy-drama “Never Have I Ever” has won the People’s Choice Award for the Best Comedy Show of 2021. The series, which has been renewed for its third season, was pitted against “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Grown-ish,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Saturday Night Live,” “Ted Lasso,” “The Upshaws,” and “Young Rock.”

The series centers on the complicated life of Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), a modern-day first-generation Indian American teenage girl. She’s an overachieving high school sophomore with a short fuse that gets her into difficult situations.

The annual fan-voted awards show — which spans 40 categories and honors numerous forms of entertainment across movies, television, music, and pop culture — was aired on Dec. 7 on NBC and E! simultaneously from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. The awards were hosted by Kenan Thompson.

“Never Have I Ever” is created by executive producer Kaling, with Lang Fisher serving as co-creator, executive producer, showrunner and writer. The Universal Television project is also executive produced by 3 Arts Entertainment’s Howard Klein and David Miner.

Also joining the cast was actress Meghan Suri, who played Aneesa, a new Indian student at Sherman Oaks High. Also seen was Utkarsh Ambudkar in a recurring role as Mr. Kulkarni, “the coolest teacher on staff at Sherman Oaks High,” who teaches English and is buddies with Devi.

Speculating season 3, Entertainment Tonight speculates that according to the show’s cast and creators, the third installment of the series will delve deeper into Devi and Paxton’s “blossoming teen romance.” Co-creator Lang Fisher told ET that the next season would discuss “sex and what do you do if you’re a nerd who’s done very little and you’re dating a much more experienced guy.”
