New York Indian American Community Supports ‘Commonsense Candidate’ Tom Suozzi for Congress

  • The Democrat, who is running for a special election to replace the seat in the U.S. Congress left vacant by the ousting of Rep. George Santos, previously served in the House for three terms.

Indian Americans recently hosted an event in Queens, New York, to support Tom Suozzi, the Democrat who is running for a special election from the 3rd congressional district to replace the seat in the U.S. Congress left vacant by the expelling of Rep. George Santos. A former congressman, Suozzi represented the Queens and Long Island swing district for three terms from 2017 to 2023.

The Jan. 28 event, held at Santoor Restaurant in Floral Park, was attended by people of diverse backgrounds who have roots in South Asia, organizers said in a press release. According to Koshy Thomas, one of the event organizers, “the Indian community has always admired Suozzi for standing up for issues that our community has cared for and this gathering strongly reflects those feelings.

In his address, Suozzi thanked the community for their support. “The Indian American community truly understood the importance of voting, particularly in this special election,” he said. He assured the audience that he would continue his excellent work of bringing people together to resolve many thorny issues, including the border crisis.”

Suozzi has a reputation as “a middle-of-the-road politician who is keenly aware of the issues an average citizen is concerned about, such as rising crime, inflation, the need for better schools for the next generation, and creating jobs for the new graduates,” organizers said. However, these issues often get marginalized by both far-left and far-right policies that are highlighted and garner the most attention.” “It is time for the nation to return to common sense policies that are beneficial to the majority of voters who are increasingly concerned about their lack of say in addressing these issues.”

Raju Abraham, one of the organizers, applauded Suozzi for his stand on principles. “Tom is a strong advocate for consensus building and who will be able to bring together various factions for necessary compromises that will end the paralysis in Washington and take the nation forward.”

George Abraham, one of the avid supporters of Suozzi, “urged the community to come out and vote and send a message to Washington that Congress should make policies to improve people’s lives, not disrupt them,” the press release said. Whether dealing with increasing crime in the neighborhoods or fighting inflation at gas pumps, we need politicians who use common sense. “That is where Tom Suozzi truly stands out from others,” he said. “He truly believes that every American should have the same right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. If someone is out there to destroy that American dream, they should be held accountable.”
