Boston University Indian Student Abhijit Paruchuri Killed in Robbery Attempt

  • The attack on the 20-year-old is the ninth such attack on students from India in the U.S.

A 20-year-old student from India has become the latest victim of an unprovoked attack in the U.S. Abhijit Paruchuri, who was murdered earlier this month in a robbery attempt, was pursuing engineering at Boston University. Police found his body on March 11, dumped in a car deep inside a forest near the campus. It is suspected that the attackers killed him for money and laptop. The police is investigating the crime and the attackers are yet to be identified. 

According to reports in Indian media, Paruchuri’s body was sent to India last week with the help of the Consulate General of India in New York and TEAM Aid. His last rites were performed in his hometown Tenali in Andhra Pradesh, the Press Trust of India reported. He is the only son of Paruchuri Chakradhar and Srilakshmi. 

A relative speaking to PTI said Paruchuri was a a bright student since his childhood. Although Abhijit’s mother initially refused her son’s wish to go abroad for higher studies, she agreed keeping his future in mind, the relative said.

The attack on Paruchuri is the ninth such incident involving Indian students studying here. Late last month, Amarnath Ghosh, a 34-year-old accomplished Kuchipudi and Bharatnatyam dancer from India, was shot dead in St Louis, Missouri. He was pursuing his master’s degree at Washington University.

 Earlier in February, Sameer Kamath, a 23-year-old Indian American student at Purdue University, was found dead in a nature preserve in Indiana in early February. In Chicago, student Syed Mazahir Ali was assaulted by robbers in Chicago. Prior to that, Vivek Saini, a 25-year-old Indian student, faced a fatal attack by a homeless drug addict in Georgia.
