Sudden Impact: Elon Musk and Indian-Origin Partner Shivon Zilis Split After Years Together
- Shivon Zilis, the Canadian-born technology executive and mother of four of Elon Musk’s children, says the billionaire ended their relationship abruptly, describing the breakup as a painful surprise but expressing hope that they can remain friends and co-parents.
Elon Musk and Shivon Zilis, one of the most private couples in the billionaire’s increasingly complicated family life, have ended their romantic relationship, with Zilis saying the separation came with little warning.
Zilis, 40, announced the breakup Friday, Oct. 2, in a lengthy post on X, the social-media platform owned by Musk. She said the relationship had changed suddenly from being in love to being over and indicated that she was still deeply attached to Musk.
“It’s hard to go from in love to let go in a week with no warning, but that’s just how it is sometimes,” Zilis wrote, according to the Washington Post and other outlets.
She also made clear that, despite the breakup, she wants their relationship as parents to continue.
“I do hope and pray he and I can be great friends and coparents,” she wrote.
Musk had not publicly responded to the announcement as of Saturday, according to India Today and other reports.
A relationship that began in the world of artificial intelligence
The Musk-Zilis relationship has always been intertwined with their professional lives.
Zilis is an accomplished technology executive in her own right. She studied economics and philosophy at Yale University, worked at IBM and later became a founding member of Bloomberg Beta, the venture-capital arm of Bloomberg focused on technology startups. She became involved with OpenAI in its early years and subsequently worked at Tesla and Neuralink.
The Washington Post, which examined her role in Musk’s legal battle with OpenAI earlier this year, described her as a longtime confidante who had worked with several of Musk’s companies. She served on OpenAI’s board from 2020 until 2023 and became an executive at Neuralink.
Her professional relationship with Musk eventually became personal. Zilis testified during Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI in May that the two had become romantically involved, while also describing the unusual circumstances surrounding the birth of their first children.
According to her testimony, Musk offered to be a sperm donor when she was considering in-vitro fertilization. Their twins, Strider and Azure, were born in 2021. The existence of the children became public the following year after court documents surfaced.
The couple subsequently had two more children: daughter Arcadia and son Seldon Lycurgus, whose birth Zilis and Musk publicly acknowledged in 2025. Reuters reported at the time that Seldon was Musk’s 14th child publicly known at that point.
Her Indian connection
Zilis’s background has attracted particular interest in India because of her Indian ancestry.
Musk himself has described Zilis as half-Indian. In a 2025 conversation with Indian entrepreneur and podcaster Nikhil Kamath, Musk said Zilis was half-Indian and explained that one of their sons, Strider Sekhar, was named partly in honor of Indian-American astrophysicist and Nobel laureate Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar. The Indian Express reported Musk’s comments and said Zilis grew up in Canada after being adopted as a baby.
Indian media have subsequently reported that Zilis’s mother was of Punjabi Indian heritage. Because details of her biological family were discussed publicly by Musk and reported differently in some accounts, the most firmly documented description is that Musk has publicly identified Zilis as half-Indian.
The Indian connection became especially visible in February 2025, when Zilis accompanied Musk and their children to his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington. The family was photographed together during Modi’s visit, bringing an otherwise largely private relationship into a highly public political setting.
Four children and a private family life
For years, Musk and Zilis kept their relationship largely out of public view.
Their first two children were born secretly in 2021. Zilis later testified that the original arrangement surrounding the twins was intended to keep Musk’s paternity private. The relationship became increasingly visible as the family grew.
Zilis gave birth to Arcadia in 2024 and Seldon in late 2024 or early 2025, with the latter’s birth announced publicly in February 2025. Reuters reported that Musk responded to the announcement with a heart emoji.
By 2026, Zilis and Musk were appearing together at prominent events. The Washington Post reported that Zilis had accompanied Musk at gatherings involving political figures and had become a more visible part of his public life.
Yet the relationship remained difficult to categorize publicly. During his OpenAI testimony, Musk referred to Zilis at one point as his “chief of staff,” while Zilis disputed that characterization. She testified that Musk was involved in her and their children’s lives but described their living arrangements differently from the way Musk characterized them.
Their personal and professional lives were therefore unusually intertwined: she was simultaneously the mother of four of his children, an executive at one of his companies and a former OpenAI board member caught in the middle of Musk’s increasingly bitter dispute with the artificial-intelligence company.
A glimpse of how quickly things changed
Zilis’s breakup announcement offered an unusually intimate glimpse into the final days of the relationship.
Their first two children were born secretly in 2021. Zilis later testified that the original arrangement surrounding the twins was intended to keep Musk’s paternity private. The relationship became increasingly visible as the family grew.
She posted a screenshot of what she described as a recent text exchange between herself and Musk. According to India Today, the messages were exchanged Sept. 24, only days before her announcement. Zilis told Musk she had enjoyed seeing him at breakfast and expressed her love. Musk responded in kind.
In another portion of the exchange, Musk told her that he had not realized that significant others could attend a dinner involving Chinese President Xi Jinping and said that otherwise he would have invited her, according to the report.
The exchange provides context for Zilis’s assertion that the breakup came unexpectedly. But it does not explain why Musk ended the relationship. Neither Zilis nor Musk has publicly provided a reason for the split.
That distinction is important given the enormous amount of speculation that routinely surrounds Musk’s personal life.
Zilis chooses gratitude over recrimination
Despite her evident hurt, Zilis’s statement was notably less accusatory than some public accounts of Musk’s previous relationships.
She wrote that she remained grateful for what they had built together and emphasized their four children. She characterized them as the enduring result of their relationship and said they had become the center of her life.
She also wrote that she had wanted to provide Musk with a sense of stability and emotional refuge from the pressures surrounding his work and public life. Her description presented their household as a place where he could find calm amid an otherwise extraordinarily turbulent existence.
That portrait is striking because Zilis’s own professional life has been deeply immersed in the same world that has made Musk one of the most controversial figures in technology.
She has worked on artificial intelligence, autonomous driving and brain-computer interfaces — areas central to Musk’s ambitions. She also became a key witness in the 2026 trial over Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI, where her professional loyalties, communications with Musk and personal relationship with him received extensive scrutiny.
The end of a complicated partnership
The breakup adds another chapter to Musk’s extraordinarily complicated family history.
Musk has children with several women, including his former wife Justine Wilson, musician Grimes and conservative writer Ashley St. Clair. His relationships with some of the mothers of his children have generated highly public disputes and legal battles.
The Zilis relationship was different in important respects. It grew out of a shared professional and technological world and remained comparatively private even as the couple had four children together.
Zilis’s announcement suggests that privacy may now give way to a new arrangement centered on co-parenting.
She has not suggested that her professional relationship with Musk’s companies is ending, nor has she announced any change in her position at Neuralink. She remains a significant figure in the technology world independent of her relationship with Musk.
And perhaps most significantly, her public message did not frame the breakup as the end of the family they created.
Instead, she focused on the four children and the possibility that she and Musk could remain friends and effective co-parents.
For a relationship that began quietly, unfolded largely behind the scenes and eventually produced four children, the ending has arrived in an unusually public fashion — through a post on Musk’s own social-media platform, from the woman who until recently was both his partner and one of his closest professional confidantes.
