Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt has joined Amazon original investigative crime series “Poacher” as an executive producer. Created, written, and directed by “Delhi Crime” filmmaker Richie Mehta, the series, premiered at Sundance last year.
Based on true events, it “unearths the largest ivory poaching ring in Indian history,” according to Amazon. The cast includes Nimisha Sajayan, Roshan Mathew and Dibyendu Bhattacharya in the lead.
Bhatt will executive produce through her Eternal Sunshine Productions. “The impact of “Poacher” was deeply personal, and Richie’s portrayal of the urgent issue of wildlife crime resonated strongly with me and the team,” she said in a statement. She told the Press Trust of India that she’s “confident ‘Poacher’ will serve as an eye-opener, delivering a powerful message to be more compassionate and considerate towards all living beings,” adding that the series is “a call to embrace coexistence,”
Bhatt started her own production house in 2021. Her first production “Darlings,” which she also starred in, was in collaboration with the Shah Rukh Khan-owned Red Chillies Entertainment. The film also starred Vijay Varma and Shefali Shah in titular roles.
According to Variety, she “helps raise awareness about relevant causes such as environmental sustainability, animal welfare and mitigating human-animal conflict through her platform, Coexist.” She also “promotes sustainable fashion through her initiative, Mi Wardrobe is Su Wardrobe.
“Poacher” will begin streaming worldwide on Prime Video on Feb. 23.
