Dancing His Way Back Home: Indian Man Faces Potential Deportation After Viral Dance Video at WWII Memorial
- The controversy erupted earlier this week when the video began circulating online, drawing sharp reactions from veterans' groups and social media users who described the act as disrespectful.
An Indian-origin man living in the United States is facing potential deportation and intense online backlash after a video showing him dancing at the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., went viral, sparking widespread criticism and drawing the attention of federal authorities.
The man, identified on social media as Madhu Raju, is believed to be residing in the U.S. on a non-immigrant visa. The widely circulated clip, posted originally on TikTok, shows him performing a choreographed dance routine at the National World War II Memorial on the National Mall, alongside a woman seen dancing with him, though no details about her identity have emerged. Free Press Journal reported that while it is not yet confirmed who the female is dancing with Raju, some social media accounts claim that she is singer Manisha Eerabathini. On her Instagram, she has shared many dancing videos with Madhu.
The footage shows Raju and a woman participating in the popular “Don’t Rush Challenge.”
The memorial commemorates the 16 million Americans who served in the armed forces during World War II and the more than 400,000 who died in the conflict, and is widely regarded as a site of solemn remembrance.
The Controversy
The controversy erupted earlier this week when the video began circulating online, drawing sharp reactions from veterans’ groups and social media users who described the act as disrespectful.
Several users argued that the memorial should not be used as a backdrop for social media content. One commenter wrote that the site was “a place of sacrifice and silence, not a stage for TikTok dances.”
Another said: “My grandfather was one of them, and he took a bullet in his leg. The DC WW2 Memorial is a place of remembrance, not a TikTok set.”
Another user remarked: “Anyone aspiring to go abroad must be subjected to a year-long compulsory intensive course in etiquette and civic education with a test at the end of it before leaving India.”
Professional and Personal Fallout
Things intensified after an activist tagged cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks, claiming that the man in the video was Madhu Raju, who had been working there as a Cloud Network Security Engineer since June 2025.
Reaction within the Indian-American community has been mixed. While some criticized the act as insensitive, others argued that calls for deportation could be disproportionate to the incident.
An activist on X (formerly Twitter) said that this was a heads-up for Palo Alto Networks’s legal team. “Your employee is in the video. His name is Madhu Raju, and he has been a Cloud Network Security Engineer at your company since June 2025,” the activist added.
LatestLY reported that as per the activist, Madhu Raju owns and operates a dance studio in Dallas named MAD Dance. The activist further claimed that Raju took down the studio’s X profile, Instagram page, and website. “After the immense backlash, Madhu Raju took down all his social media accounts,” the post added.
According to Free Press Journal, an X user wrote to Palo Alto Networks: “If you fire this employee and issue a statement, it will help repair most of the damage. If you want to turn this into a positive public relations opportunity, hire an American for this role. There have been thousands of layoffs in the technology sector, leaving many unemployed.”
Important note on employment status: There are conflicting reports about whether Raju was terminated. According to M9 News, Palo Alto Networks has not released any official statement regarding Madhu Raju or the viral video controversy. Since the video surfaced about three days ago, Raju has faced heavy criticism online. M9 News also reported that the latest rumor about his alleged firing highlights another issue with social media. False claims often spread quickly as users chase attention, likes and shares.
However, one Telugu news outlet Tupaki reported that responding swiftly to the controversy, Palo Alto Networks announced that the employee was no longer associated with the organization. This claim has not been independently verified by other major news sources.
Immigration Implications
According to LatestLY, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials are reportedly reviewing the case to determine if Raju’s conduct constitutes a violation of the terms of his non-immigrant visa. Under U.S. immigration law, visa holders can face deportation or have their status revoked for “behavior inconsistent with the terms of their stay” or for engaging in acts that disturb public order at federal sites.
LatestLY further explained that legal experts suggest that while dancing itself is not a crime, performing such acts at a federal monument can lead to charges of “disorderly conduct” or “demonstrating without a permit.” If a criminal conviction follows, it often triggers an automatic review of an individual’s right to remain in the country.
The National Park Service (NPS), which manages the memorial, maintains strict guidelines regarding “appropriate decorum” at national monuments.
Apology and Current Status
According to multiple sources, Raju issued an apology, insisting that he did not intend to cause offense. Reaction within the Indian-American community has been mixed. While some criticized the act as insensitive, others argued that calls for deportation could be disproportionate to the incident.
TCO News noted that as of March 7 evening, Raju remains in the U.S. with no reported changes to his employment or immigration status. The story continues to trend on X, but remains driven by online outrage rather than official action.
TCO News also emphasized that no arrests, citations, or formal deportation proceedings have been announced by the National Park Service, ICE, or any federal agency.
