Zarna Garg to Star in Comedy Pilot at CBS Co-produced by Mindy Kaling and Kevin Hart

  • The Indian American comedian has made a mark in the comedy scene with her clean family-friendly comedy while wearing her signature kurta and bindi on stage.

Indian American comedian and screenwriter Zarna Garg will star in a multi-cam comedy pilot that has been ordered at CBS. Titled “Zarna,” the it will be written and executive produced by Garg, along with Darlene Hunt, who is also “attached to the project as writer, executive producer, and showrunner,” as reported by Variety. 

Other executive producers include Mindy Kaling and Jessica Kumai Scott, along with Howard Klein as well as Kevin Hart, Bryan Smiley, and Mike Stein. Warner Bros. Television, where Kaling International is under an overall deal, is the studio.

“Zarna is a proud immigrant woman who’s been raising her American born kids on Indian values. But now that they’re getting older, it’s time for her to focus on her own American dream,” the official longline of the pilot says, according to Variety. 

Garg performs clean family-friendly comedy while wearing her kurta and bindi on stage. She draws you into her authentic Indian world full of ironies, merciless maternal advice, and fresh observations on American life. She most recently released the comedy special “One in a Billion” in 2023 on Amazon Prime Video, where she she takes on matchmaking, entitled kids, clueless husbands, mean aunties and tyrannical mothers-in-law.

As an actress, Garg  previously starred in the comedy feature “A Nice Indian Boy.” As a writer, her screenplay titled “Rearranged” won the best comedy screenplay award at the 2019 Austin Film Festival and was also a semi-finalist for the Academy Nicholl Fellowships. 

She won Hart’s Peacock comedy competition series “Lyft Comics” in 2021. She also won the Top Comedy Feature Screenplay Award at the 2019 Austin Film Festival and was a Nicholl Fellowships Semi-Finalist. A regular at the iconic Comedy Cellar and Carolines on Broadway in New York City, she has performed in Las Vegas and at the famed Kennedy Center.
